Shopping forecast: Big back-to-school season

If you plan to buy a little extra school supplies this year, you’re not alone.

Shoppers are in “stock up” mode instead of “make do” mode this year according to the National Retail Federation’s annual back-to-school survey.

Total spending for kindergarten through college is expected to reach $75.8 billion, up from last year’s $68 billion.

The trend is obvious at Dawley Farm Village, where new stores and familiar favorites are  attracting a growing number of shoppers.

“We have the perfect mix of stores for one-stop back-to-school shopping, and it’s obvious both parents and students agree,” said Jamie Scherer, commercial property manager of Dawley for Lloyd Companies.

“It doesn’t matter whether you need new clothes, notebooks, a mobile phone or a haircut, you can take care of it all at Dawley Farms.”

The Retail Federation found the average family with children in grades K-12 plans to spend an average of $673.57 on back-to-school, about $43 more than last year. Those shopping for back-to-college plan to spend $888.71, about $10 less than last year.

“Families are still looking for bargains, but there are signs that they are less worried about the economy than in the past,” NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Heading into the second half of the year, we are optimistic that overall economic growth and consumer spending will continue to improve as they did in the first two quarters of the year. We fully expect retailers to be aggressive with offering great deals both in stores and online for back to school shoppers. And retailers will keep a close eye on inventory levels as families spread out their shopping throughout the summer.”

To help shoppers stay on top of back-to-school deals and trends, Dawley Farm Village has launched a fun new Facebook page. Keep watching it for announcements of new businesses coming to the development, too!

“This Facebook page is a great one to follow, both for back-to-school and beyond” Scherer said. “Our Dawley stores have so much good information to share, plus you can hear directly from students as they show us their back-to-school hauls!”
